Esophageal Manometry

ADVANCED ESOPHAGEAL DIAGNOSTICS

Esophageal manometry, also called high-resolution manometry (HRM), is an advanced diagnostic study that measures the strength, coordination, and function of the esophagus. The esophagus is the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from the throat into the stomach. When these muscles or valves do not function properly, patients may experience symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort, chronic heartburn, regurgitation, coughing, or the sensation that food is “sticking.”

The closely spaced pressure sensors are used to create a comprehensive map of muscle activity throughout the esophagus, helping physicians diagnose motility disorders quickly and precisely.

TESTING FOR PATIENTS EXPERIENCING

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Persistent heartburn or reflux symptoms – GERD
  • Chest pain not related to the heart
  • Chronic coughing or throat symptoms related to reflux
  • Regurgitation of food or liquids
  • Suspected esophageal motility disorders
  • Evaluation before anti-reflux surgery or hiatal hernia surgery
