Am I Eligible for a Screening Colonoscopy?

There are two types of colonoscopies:  Screening and Diagnostic

  • A Screening colonoscopy is a routine, preventive procedure that is used to monitor the health of your colon. It can be scheduled without a referral for any patient who:
    • is age 45 or older
    • has no signs or symptoms of illness
    • has no family history of colon cancer
  • A Diagnostic colonoscopy is used to investigate symptoms or to screen individuals at increased risk and requires a referral prior to being scheduled
    *If you have:
    • family history of colon cancer or
    • are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below,

Please contact your primary care provider for an evaluation and possible referral for a diagnostic colonoscopy.

Common signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for a diagnostic colonoscopy include:

  • Persistent changes in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or changes in stool consistency
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
  • Abdominal pain or cramping that does not go away
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count) without a known cause
  • Family history of colon cancer or polyps
  • Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (such as Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your primary care provider so they can evaluate your symptoms, assess your risk factors and determine if a referral for a colonoscopy is necessary for further evaluation.
